Black Tourmaline is also called Schorl. Although it has been used worldwide for a very long time, it only arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century thanks to Dutch sailors. They used this gem to clean their pipes. Indeed, it is pyroelectric (when heated, it accumulates opposite electrical charges). By rubbing it against their clothes, they turned it into an ash magnet.
